A Brief History of GCA >> Back to team's page
2000 - 2002 Chris Harris
GCA emerged as a force in world football in 2000. Entering the league
half way through the competition to replace a team that had pulled out,
GCA (then known as Central) not unexpectedly finished last. This
inauspicious start was quickly remedied as the coach Chris Harris
energised the team into second place in 2001 and FIRST in 2002.
2003 - 2005 Olly Crouch
Our first great leader, Chairman Harris, moved on to pastures new
mid-season and left the team rudderless and severely lacking in numbers.
Gaffer Crouch came in on a free transfer from financially bankrupt SIS
to take up the slack. The second half of 2003 saw consolidation and a
gradual but unspectacular climb up to mid-table obscurity and a stunning
come back from 0-6 down to 7-7 against the league winners. With some
stability 2004 included a losing Cup Final appearance and new respect
from the other teams. With players in their second season under Crouch
true teamwork and spirit shone through and took GCA into the new era of
professionalism. The foundations for one of Australian football's
sleeping giants to awake were set.
2006 - Present Nick Sharpe
(Known at GCA as the Year of the Ring In) it proved to be one of the
most contentious years in the club's history. In the running for all 3
competitions, GCA ended up as runners up in the competition and cup,
winning only the Friendly Cup. The names of many of the opposition
players still remains in doubt but one Brazilian looking player with
bucked teeth, played for only one game, prior to returning to his home
in Barcelona.
To remedy this travesty of justice, GCA introduced the scholarship
system in 2007, providing students with 6 months of free fees in
exchange for their footballing services on a Friday. This allowed many
players who would normally have to work on a Friday to continue playing
the game they love.
Suffice to say every game in the 2007 competition was won and the trophy
was back where it belongs.
