The Mighty Blues >> Back to team's page
SELC has been proud to be associated with the ELSA league since its inception, and thanks to the no-nonsense style of Steve Morris, the first coach; SELC won the league in the first year. But the lure of the Japanese Yen was too strong for Steve, and before you could say 'Don't leave us', he was jetting off on Ansett Airlines never to be seen again.
SELC then underwent a remarkable change in style and tactics under the long serving present coach, Bert Colombi. Bert's policy of playing everyone who turned up often resulted in 22 players taking the field (not at the same time, I may add). However, the constant number of substitutions often hampered SELC's free flowing style of football.
A lack of trophies but not camaraderie thus followed, until 2007 when the Mighty SELC rose from the ashes and won the 2007 Knockout Cup!!!!Indeed, the last 2 years have been their most successful, finishing 2nd in the league both years and only losing one match in the 2008 season. This change seemed to coincide with e coach's offer to buy players beer after each match if they won. A policy which was greatly appreciated by the players but not the coaches' bank manager!!!
But SELC's over-riding philosophy is to play to enjoy, and with that in mind SELC players have fun at their training practices on Wednesdays and league matches on Fridays. We are always on the lookout for new players to share in the enjoyment of playing in the blue and white of the Mighty SELC. Come and check us out.
